Fashion For Compassion
Animal Control Officer Caitie Zylstra and her canine companion Sofie Bianca show off their matching outfits April 21 at the Peninsula Humane Society’s eighth Annual Fashion For Compassion luncheon and fashion show at the Hilton Hotel in Burlingame. Proceeds benefit the Hope Program which helps care for the neediest animals and gives them a second chance at life, saving an average of 190 animals every month.

Service Animals Honored
Guide dogs, handicapped assistance animals, detection dogs, therapy animals and search and rescue dogs selflessly serve people. To honor these animals and their work, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) has launched its 6th Annual ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event to screen service animals who dedicate their lives to helping the public. More than 250 board certified veterinary ophthalmologists throughout the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico will donate their time and resources during the month of May to provide free, sight-saving eye exams to thousands of eligible service animals. Registration for service animal owners and handlers runs from April 1 - 30 at www.ACVOeyeexam.org. Fun On The Fourth Of July
The ‘senior’ Redwood City fire truck carried members of the Redwood City Council during Redwood City’s Fourth of July parade Wednesday morning. Also in the parade were units from the city’s fire, police and parks and recreation departments. The day’s activities were sponsored and managed by the Peninsula Celebration Association, a private nonprofit volunteer organization which has sponsored the event since 1939.

Harry Belafonte Helps HIP Housing
Singer, actor and social activist Harry Belafonte was the guest speaker at HIP Housing’s 40th Anniversary Luncheon held at the Hotel Sofitel in Redwood City on Friday, June15. HIP Housing is a community resource that provides creative, affordable solutions to a variety of housing needs in San Mateo County. He autographed his new book “My Song — A Memoir”  under the watchful eyes of fans Katie Godowski, Lisa Summers, Mary Wider (sitting), and Patricia Smith.

Adult School Graduation
Francis Saludez proudly shows off the high school diploma he received during the San Mateo Adult School’s graduation ceremony at the College of San Mateo on Wednesday, June 13. He was also one of five graduates receiving a scholarship from the Burlingame Bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. More than 120 other students earned either a High School or a GED diploma through the Adult School this year. From left to right, , mother Mary Saludez, sister Nicole, and grandmother Beth Saludez.

PCRC Luncheon
Luis Rodriguez was the keynote speaker at the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center’s 2012 Luncheon held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City on June 14. Rodriguez is one of the leading Chicano writers in the country, having published 14 books in categories including memoir, fiction, nonfiction, children’s literature, and poetry. His thirty years of gang intervention work helped in the development of the Community-based Gang Intervention Model in Los Angeles. The PCRC fosters collaborative engagement by bringing people together, facilitating conversation and building these skills in the community.

Arboretum Winner
Jacqueline Montes prepares plants for sale at the combination Greenhouse and Nursery next to the Kohl Pump house in San Mateo Central Park. Montes is the first San Mateo Arboretum Society Scholarship recipient in the Master Gardener program. She and other Society volunteers provide free gardening information to the public at the nursery on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

Samaritan House Gala
Bidding was fast and furious during the auction at the Samaritan House Gala 2012 held at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame on Saturday. Master of ceremonies U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, and auctioneer Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, encourages the bidding while Samaritan House Board of Directors President Tish Busselle records each transaction. Samaritan House is a private nonprofit organization providing services to help meet the essential needs of more than 12,000 low-income people within San Mateo County.

Veterinary Vision
Elaine, a golden retriever, has her eyes checked at Veterinary Vision in San Carlos. She is held by Sandra Carson, left, while Dr. Albert Mughannam uses a magnifier to examine Elaine’s retinas. During the month of May, Veterinary Vision is part of the Fifth Annual ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam, which provides free eye exams for service dogs. Carson is an instructor at Paws For Purple Hearts, an organization that helps heal returning combat veterans by teaching them to train service dogs for their comrades with physical disabilities. Elaine and her two brothers, Ethan and Eldridge, will eventually become service dogs for disabled veterans.

Leigh Smith’s five rescued Italian greyhounds were the height of canine fashion at ‘Fashion For Compassion,’ a luncheon, auction and pet fashion show that benefited the Peninsula Humane Society. It was held at the Airport Hilton Hotel in Burlingame on Sunday.

Hip Housing Fundraiser

Cheer Around The Bay
Vicky Chabo of Burlingame (front and center) and her Rebels Elite teammates perform during the Ninth Annual Cheer Around the Bay held March 4 at El Camino High School in South San Francisco. The competition was open to dance teams, performance cheer teams, stunt groups, and hip hop teams from middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Rebels Elite boasts nearly 150 athletes ages 4-Adult, and its All-Girl International Level 6 “Queens” team will be competing in April at the 2012 International Cheer Union World Championships in Orlando, Fla.

Elmo's Birthday
Two-year old Lina Bozic holds up a new Elmo finger puppet she received during a birthday party given for the popular Sesame Street character Feb.  3 by Barnes and Noble at Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo. The party featured a special book reading, games, crafts, and cake. Elmo first appeared on Sesame Street in 1983.

Opera At Kohl Mansion
Five young opera singers thrilled audiences Feb.  5 at An Evening of Operatic Highlights, a presentation of Music at Kohl Mansion in Burlingame. They are part of San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellowship Program, which offers exceptionally gifted singers intensive individual training and roles of increasing importance in San Francisco Opera’s main-stage season. Love Boat Gala
The Hillsborough Auxiliary to Peninsula Family Service set sail with its “Love Boat” Gala Feb. 4 at the Pavilion By The Bay on Treasure Island. Proceeds of event will support Transition of Care at Sequoia and Mills-Peninsula Hospitals and help promote Health and Wellness with a focus on physical fitness and nutritional awareness. Honoring Our History
A unique learning opportunity was provided by ‘Honoring Our History,’ a traveling World War I exhibition that made a one-day stop at the San Mateo County History Museum on Friday, Feb. 10. The event was coordinated by Waddell and Reed, a mutual fund company that was founded by two World War I veterans.

Visitors to the exhibition included Bob Brill, USAF, Retired and Grace Kenmotsu, a “West Point Mother” whose son graduated from the celebrated military academy in 2006. Frank Buckles, the last U.S. World War I veteran, died on Feb. 27, 2011 at the age of 110.

Vault 164, a restaurant located in the 1925 Crocker Bank on the corner of Second Avenue and B Street in Downtown San Mateo, has many of the building’s antique vault pieces sprinkled throughout the dining area and bar.

Workers made a final check of French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’ yesterday as it returned to the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University after spending two years on display at the North Carolina Museum of Art. The public can again view this iconic statue Wednesday, Jan. 25

Winter at the Zoo
The San Francisco Zoo celebrated the coming of winter in a big way on Wednesday. The polar bear habitat was converted into a winter wonderland with the help of the San Francisco Ice Company. It donated 10 tons of ice which it converted to snow and blew into the enclosure. In addition, zoo staff served the bears ‘popsicles’ made with fish, carrots, honey and meat juice.

International Grand Ball

The Magna Carta.
An original copy of the Magna Carta, one of the most important legal documents in the history of democracy, is on display at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco from May 7 through June 5. The display is part of BritWeek 2011, an annual celebration of cultural crosscurrents between Great Britain and California. Dr.  James Ganz (far right), Curator of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, explains that this is one of only four surviving manuscripts from the 1217 issue.

This 4-foot long Rhinoceros Iguana, a native of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, is part of the new "Summer of Slither" exhibit which will feature more than 60 new snakes and lizards from around the world. The exhibit runs from May 9 through September 5, 2011.

Facebook Town Hall Meeting
President Obama answers questions posed by moderator and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at a town hall meeting at the company’s Palo Alto headquarters on April 20. The event was streamed live, and the questions posed to the President came from both the Internet and from members of the audience. The topics included the deficit, the economy, affordable housing, energy, and immigration.

Unbearably Cool!
Uulu, one of the polar bears at the San Francisco Zoo, appears to be enjoying himself during  the December 21 First Day of Winter Celebration at the San Francisco Zoo. The San Francisco Ice Company donated the 10 tons of ice which was converted to fluffy snowflakes and  blown into the Polar Bear Habitat. Along with the snow, the bears were treated to gift boxes containing tasty snacks.

Japanesque
Karin Breuer, Curator in Charge for the exhibit Japanesque: the Japanese Print in the Era of Impressionism, describes a wood block print by Katsushika Hokusai, believed to have been created in 1814. It is one example of Shunga, a variety of inexpensive, mass-produced picture book. The exhibition contains approximately 250 prints, drawings, and artist's books and will be on display from October 16 through January 9, 2011 at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.

Buddhist Temple 100th Anniversary
Reverend Ryuta Furumoto accepts a gift of food during a Buddhist Offering Processional. This was part of the San Mateo Buddhist Temple’s Centennial Commemorative Service on Sunday, October 10. The ceremony was followed by a banquet whose guests included television personality Jan Yanehiro, Senator Dr. Leland Yee, and Assembly Member Jerry Hill.

Oban Festival
Grandpa Rick Tom coaxes a smile from granddaughters Kiara and Makena Nitao. The girls are performing in the Japanese Buddhist Obon Festival held on the evening of Saturday, August 7 at the San Mateo Buddhist Temple. Obon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. It has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years.
