First Monochrome Image I Actually Liked: This year I experimented with black and white digital imaging in an attempt to re-imagine my earliest photographic efforts when all I had to work with was black and white film.

Local Mr. Fixit: During the pandemic, one San Mateo resident offered small appliance repair services for his neighbors. This is the first community photograph I made for the paper during the lock-down. The photo was unremarkable except for the second flash, placed just out of the frame, which provided some highlights on the Vespa and the clutter in the corner of the garage.

Another photographer was there, and his photos appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle. His and my photos were almost identical.
Early Morning Exploration: Inspired in part by a new F 1.4 17mm TTartisan lens, I started shooting at sunrise. This photo combined some interesting color juxtapositions: the blue dawn sky, the off-color illumination from the streetlight, and the green glow from somebody's living room.

Dawn's Early Light: Early morning sunlight gave everything a warm glow, and these clouds lit by the dawn's early light were rendered pink.
Silhouettes: This image had an enormous dust that was cloned out. Photographing a clear blue sky at a small aperture is the easiest way to locate those unwanted bits of sensor flotsam.

Morning Warmth: Once the sun rose clear of the horizon, the light became less pink and more warm. This wooden garage door was directly lit, as you can see by the narrow shadows.
Warm And Cool: When I first saw this photo, I sensed something different about it, but until, couldn't put my finger on it. I just now understood its appeal: The warm morning light is lighting the stucco wall obliquely, show off some shadows and texture. The stairway is lit by the open shade of the blue morning sky, giving it a cold hue.
Covid Casualty? This abandoned storefront was once a thriving business on the corner of Ninth Avenue and Parnassus. Now, bereft of furniture and fixtures, it lies vacant, no doubt a casualty of the isolation brought on by Covid.

Bipod: I was surprised at the amount of time it took to establish the proper camera position for this simple shot. If I remember correctly, I'm bent at the waist, holding the camera below waist level, attempting to frame the image while looking at the LCD from an oblique angle.

Big Spider: This spider's leg span was about a dime's diameter, and seeing one this large in its web was unusual, although I encountered a similar arachnid several weeks earlier. I made the shot by setting the focusing distance to its minimum distance, extending the camera out at arm's length, and moving the camera fore and aft, relying on the Fuji's Focus Peaking to give me a clue when I'd reached optimal focus. It took several tries, but I finally got an image that was reasonably sharp.

Half Moon Bay: I spent an afternoon walking through the back streets of Half Moon Bay with my friend Shawn, the real inspiration behind my renewed interest in street photography. Walking and talking, we encountered visual opportunities to capture some of HMB's unique nature. This is a flower shop and nursery.

This photo exists only because I liked the warmth in these yellow sacks of potting soil.

Some things don't have to make sense to be fun.
2021 Sonoma Valley Muzzle Loader Trek: I photographed a club sponsored trek, a reality based live-action role play set in early nineteenth century. Participants must demonstrate mastery of primitive survival skills and are awarded points based on their proficiency and historical accuracy. Here, long hunters a seen fording a shallow stream, and as luck would have it, the cloudless blue sky was reflected in the water. A lucky accident, but this photo has prompted me to explore controlling future shots using a polarizing filter to enhance, not eliminate, reflections. Unfortunately, there have been few opportunities to photograph cloud reflections in puddles due to the drought.

Eighteenth Century Confab: A tiny, shoe-mounted LightPix Labs mini-speedlight, combined with a Fuji X100S proved a winning combination. Since most of the action is relatively close to camera, the light falloff on the rear characters doesn't detract from the shot. Fill light at its finest.
Backlit Leaf: This leaf is actually backlit. Light passing through the leaf gave the details to the water droplets. Again, the manual focus TTArtisan lens made framing and focusing a challenge. I used the same technique as I did with the spider.
Rainbow Succulent: I found this succulent in a small green space in my neighborhood. Interesting color, but like many plants, possessing an ephemeral beauty.

Spa Day For Frenchie: I don't know if this is the "before" or "after" for this French Bulldog passing time in a dog groomer's window waiting room. His image sharpness suffers from the old, wavy window glass and the less-than-stellar performance of my Nikon P7000.

Juggler, Carolans Mansion Halloween Party: One of the most difficult, and most anticipated, photo opportunities of the year. Digital projectors throw images onto the mansion's walls, but when this photo was taken, the projected images weren't the most dynamic. Considering the circumstances, not a bad image.

Squid Game Squad: During the Halloween party, a number of volunteers entertained visitors with their own version of the Squid Game. The clouds were great, the kids were willing, and the shot was made.

Bethlehem 2021 A.D: This recreation of Bethlehem as it may have appeared at the first Christmas is a labor of love for volunteers who don period correct dress and tend to period correct reenactments of daily life. Here three angels bring Tidings of Joy to the event's hundreds of visitors.
